Fine‐grain beta diversity of Palaearctic grassland vegetation

چکیده

Questions Which environmental factors influence fine-grain beta diversity of vegetation and do they vary among taxonomic groups? Location Palaearctic biogeographic realm. Methods We extracted 4,654 nested-plot series with at least four different grain sizes between 0.0001 m² 1,024 from the GrassPlot database, covering a wide range grassland other open habitat types. derived extensive structural information for these series. For each groups (vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens, all), we calculated slope parameter (z-value) power law species–area relationship (SAR), as measure. tested whether z-values differed respect to gradients (latitude, elevation, macroclimate), ecological (site) characteristics (several stress–productivity, disturbance heterogeneity measures, including land use) alpha (c-value SAR). Results Mean were highest intermediate vascular plants lowest bryophytes. Bivariate regressions against variables had rather low predictive (mean R² = 0.07 less taxa). strongest predictors herb layer cover (negative), elevation (positive), rock stone (positive) c-value (U-shaped). All metrics related use (fertilization, livestock grazing, mowing, burning, decrease in naturalness) led z-values. Other little or no impact on The patterns lichens all taxa combined similar but weaker than those plants. Conclusions conclude that productivity has negative positive effects z-values, while effect varies depending type intensity. These differences can be explained via drivers mean occupancy species, which is mathematically linked diversity.

The influence of plant diversity on people's perception and aesthetic appreciation of grassland vegetation

The conservation of biodiversity critically depends on the value that humans attach to it. Apart from an ecological and economic value, an aesthetic value has often been assigned to biodiversity. However, it is not known whether lay people appreciate the diversity of species and not just certain individual species or nature as a whole. We studied in a series of experiments and field studies peo...

Plant functional diversity enhances associations of soil fungal diversity with vegetation and soil in the restoration of semiarid sandy grassland

The trait-based approach shows that plant functional diversity strongly affects ecosystem properties. However, few empirical studies show the relationship between soil fungal diversity and plant functional diversity in natural ecosystems. We investigated soil fungal diversity along a restoration gradient of sandy grassland (mobile dune, semifixed dune, fixed dune, and grassland) in Horqin Sand ...

Grassland vegetation changes and nocturnal global warming

Global minimum temperatures (TMIN) are increasing faster than maximum temperatures, but the ecological consequences of this are largely unexplored. Long-term data sets from the shortgrass steppe were used to identify correlations between TMIN and several vegetation variables. This ecosystem is potentially sensitive to increases in TMIN. Most notably, increased spring TMIN was correlated with de...

Grassland management regimens reduce small-scale heterogeneity and species diversity of beta-proteobacterial ammonia pxidizer populations.

The impact of soil management practices on ammonia oxidizer diversity and spatial heterogeneity was determined in improved (addition of N fertilizer), unimproved (no additions), and semi-improved (intermediate management) grassland pastures at the Sourhope Research Station in Scotland. Ammonia oxidizer diversity within each grassland soil was assessed by PCR amplification of microbial community...
